Melaka was founded by Parameswara, a prince from Sumatra, when he was resting under a tree called Pokok Melaka and hence the name of Melaka was derived from. He saw a mouse-deer or pelandok defended itself against one of his hunting dogs. You could see the logo of a mouse-deer in the state flag of Melaka.

Melaka was ruled by dynasties of Sultans until it was conquered by the Portugese and then by the Dutch before falling into the hands of British. For a brief moment, Melaka was conquered by the Japanese during the invasion of Japan.
